How Do I Get Married

Getting married in Australia is a beautiful experience. A time of celebration of your love for each other. A perfect moment to share with your family and friends.

As a professionally trained Civil Marriage Celebrant I am appointed by the Attorney General Department to legally marry you and register your marriage in Australia. For your marriage to be valid and legally binding it has to be performed by an appointed representative of the Attorney General department.

Set The Date

The most important step for getting married is to set the date. This will determine the availability of your celebrant, the venue and other suppliers. Typically you should set a rough date for the wedding so that you can narrow down availability. Next you have to decide where to get married.

Where To Get Married

Secure a venue for the wedding ceremony and a venue for the Wedding Reception (if not the same). Availability of the venues is driving your date. If you want to get married in a specific wedding location that is very popular you might have to be flexible with the wedding date.

Book Your Wedding Celebrant

Once you secured the venue and the date book your wedding celebrant or religious minister. I am very happy to assist you with your wedding if you like. As a Central Coast Marriage Celebrant and Sydney Marriage Celebrant I normally service Sydney, Central Coast of New South Wales, Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, but I am happy to come to any location in Australia to perform your wedding ceremony. Please fill out the form below for an informal discussion of your Wedding:

Legal Requirements

Do not worry too much about the legal side. One of my main services as your Marriage Celebrant is to help you meeting all the legal requirements.

At least one month before you can get married in Australia you are required to file your “Intent of Marriage” with me. My recommendation is that you file this form as early as possible because you also have to provide legal documentation that establishes whether you are eligible to being married.

We need the following documents:

  • Birth Certificates Mandatory for both bride and groom

  • Proof of Identity Mandatory for both bride and Groom

  • Divorce Certificate Divorce Certificates are mandatory for any previous marriages.

If you were born or divorced overseas be mindful that you might have to get an official translation of the original documents into English. This all requires some time and you should not leave it to the last minute.

Your Wedding Ceremony and Wedding Vows

The most beautiful part of your Wedding will be when you and your partner commit their love to each other in the Wedding Ceremony and the Wedding Vows. This is a very personal and intimate moment on your way to a married couple. I will help you to make this very special moment memorable for the rest of your life.

I usually meet with my couples a few times before the big day to discuss wedding ceremony ideas, ceremony music or songs, wedding ceremony readings and your wedding vows. Over the years I collected many different sample materials from which you can choose.

I will draft your wedding ceremony for You to review. I will revise it with your comments until we will have the final version. I always enjoy this process of preparing the Wedding Ceremony with my couples because it is so lovely to see the love for each other and the excitement for the big day ahead.

Your wedding vows are the special commitment that you make to your partner. You can select from some standard vows or be creative and create your own. I have many examples that you can use for inspiration.

Rehearsal

It is important to me that everything works well on the day. For this reason I do a rehearsal with all of my couples and the bridal party. I found that when everybody has seen the venue and went through the process once, the actual wedding ceremony is going much smoother and without major hiccups.

Book Critical Suppliers Early

My husband is an accomplished Sydney Wedding Photographer and he is like myself booked out months in advance. Booking your venue, the celebrant and your photographer is probably the highest priority when you decide to get married. My recommendation is to book them early. Here is a list of types of suppliers that normally do only 1 wedding per day and hence might be booked out early (at least the good ones are):

  • Marriage Celebrant

  • Venue

  • Photographer

  • Videographer

  • Band or DJ

  • Master of Ceremony

The Fun of Preparing your Wedding

Once you booked these suppliers you can relax and look into all the other fun things that you do at your wedding. There are so many fantastic wedding ideas and suppliers these days that can make your day very special.

I suggest that you visit a few Bridal Expos to get ideas and find good suppliers. Other sources to find suppliers and ideas are online Wedding Directories such as Weddings4u.com.au or kissthebride.com.au.

I hope that this page was helpful and I am looking forward meeting with you soon to discuss your wedding. Enjoy your wedding preparation and congratulations for getting married again.
